Shenandoah National Park – Skyline Drive
Shenandoah National Park receives 1.3 million visitors each year who enjoy more than 197,000 acres of land and over 500 miles of hiking trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The unique geography, stunning waterfalls, plentiful wildlife, and 75 scenic overlooks along the historic Skyline Drive, are some of the area’s most popular attractions. The Drive, a National Scenic Byway that winds 105 miles along the crest of the mountains, provides spectacular vistas to the east and west. Natural and cultural exhibits and special information programs are offered seasonally within the Park. There are 4 campgrounds, 3 lodging facilities, dining, retail and much more. Lake Arrowhead
A delightful stream-fed 34-acre lake filled with a variety of game fish, offers summer swimming from a white sand beach. Canoes and paddle boats are available for rent in summer. Lake Arrowhead
This unique and award-winning linear park is an Urban Wildlife Corridor along the Hawksbill Creek and is a designated VA Birding and Wildlife Trail and bird sanctuary. The 10-foot wide, paved walking and biking loop extends more than 2 miles, offering an ADA compliant path for exercise and pure enjoyment of visitors and their pets. The scenery changes from majestic mountains to waterway habitats of mammals and numerous bird species including ducks, heron and kingfisher. To enjoy fishing in the Hawksbill, which is stocked with trout between October and June, appropriate licenses are required. The landscaped banks and Greenway areas are central to many festivals and activities and the site of the infamous “Duck Races”, hundreds of little rubber ducks bobbing their way to victory during town celebrations and holiday events. | |
