Description

Welcome to our home! For the first time, this National Registry of Historic Places property is being opened for public use. From a pre-Revolutionary War fort, to the current modern renovations, to the blue prints of what is sure to become an oasis for getaways and events; this is not your typical weekend retreat on the river! This is an opportunity to support a historic treasure…while having a great time in a beautiful place! The Heiston-Strickler House, also referred to as “The Old Stone House”, began its’ life as an underground, stone fort with tunnel access to the Shenandoah River sometime in the early to mid-1700’s. In 1790, a two-story, stone structure was completed overtop the fort. Over the centuries, the property has had many facelifts. Wooden additions and out-buildings have been built, torn down and rebuilt. The tunnel has been flooded out and caved in. Thousands of acres of the original farmland have been divided off, sold, and rumor has it…some has been gambled away! All the while, the stone house itself has remained in the family of the original founder, Colonel Daniel Strickler. Paintings in the living room depict the house in varying stages over the last 200 years! In 2006, the current owners began one of the most thorough renovations the house has ever had! The interior was completely gutted to bare walls and dirt floor! The collapsing fort cellar was dug out, rebuilt, and reinforced with steel and concrete. The beautiful chestnut beams were exposed, repaired, and refinished. And of course, amenities had to be added! Central heating and air conditioning was made possible through bulkheads and creative use of interior walls. Solid knotty alder doors were placed throughout the home including a wonderful hidden door at the entry to the fort cellar. The downstairs was designed to include: a modern kitchen with electric range, microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator; a living area with a large stone fireplace; a laundry room equipped with high-efficiency washer/dryer; and a convenient half-bath. The second story has been transformed into two huge bedrooms and a massive full bathroom with a steam shower unit and a separate toilet room. Each bedroom has a queen size bed with luxury bedding, satellite television and a beautiful stone fireplace (Fireplaces' are decorative and nonoperational). At this time, the fort cellar and attic are not finished. We appreciate your understanding and compliance with avoiding use of these spaces. We will keep you posted when these spaces will be available for your enjoyment. The exterior of the house and the 5-acre property are in the infancy stage of renovation. The small front porch has undergone some repair due to weather and bug damage and now boasts a knotty alder door with a speakeasy, two large stagecoach lights, A wood addition was recently taken down due to its’ irreparable state (you can still see the outline of where it was on the east wall). There is a free-standing stone fireplace that was once part of an old summer kitchen which burned down long ago. Future plans for the exterior include landscaping, a sun room addition, in-law’s quarters, a detached garage and stone walkways. The Shenandoah River runs along the property approximately 100 yards from the house. Immediately behind the property there is a steep bank which does not allow much river access. If you follow the property line west you will enter onto approximately ¾ mile of riverfront which is manicured for use. The owners and operators of the surrounding 100-acre beef and poultry farm reside south of the Stone House. They too are descendants and family of Colonel Strickler and are as warm and welcoming as any country-folk you could ever meet! Don’t be surprised if someone stops down and invites you to a barbeque on the river or offers to tell you stories about the property. Next to the Snyder home is a small family cemetery which is as old as the stone house itself! Generations of loved ones including Colonel Daniel Strickler are buried there and are still being laid to rest there today. You are welcome to explore the area but please remain respectful of the residents and mindful that it is a working farm. The living room and bedrooms all have televisions with satellite access. There is wireless internet and telephone service throughout the house. A PlayStation and DVD player can be found in the living room. Feel free to bring some games and movies. Board games are in the trunk. See if you can find the hidden Fort Cellar door, but please do not enter! Although structurally secure the space is unfinished and you may come face to face with a lot of unwelcome eight-legged family members! Likewise, the attic door should remain locked. The space is utilized for HVAC access and storage by owners only until the next phase of upgrades! Shower is not as intimidating as it looks!! An operating booklet is in the bathroom. You must turn the computer on to operate the steam unit, jets, fan, or radio. The steam unit is set at a maximum temperature of 104 degrees; you will not want any hotter than that! It takes some time to get going so turn it on a few minutes prior to use and make sure the cabin doors are closed. The radio has to be tuned manually. Sorry there are no pre-sets. The shower heads can be utilized without the computer. There is a knob below the computer you can adjust to dictate the head you wish to use (handheld, rain shower, jets). The temperature knob is extremely sensitive!!! Do not crank up or you will scold yourself. Please start out with the current setting and make very slight adjustments as necessary. Kitchen is stocked with dishes, utensils, glassware, pots/pans, coffee pot, toaster oven and all typical appliances. Gas grill available.   Thank You for visiting and Enjoy your stay!!

28 miles to Massanutten Resort, 4 miles to Luray Caverns, 12 miles to the Thornton Gap entrance to the Shenandoah National Park, and the George Washington National Forest Storybook Trail is 12 miles away.

Hi -- the Stone House is an amazing treasure of a place to stay along the beautiful Shenandoah River. Everything was perfect inside and out. The home has so much historical charm, is very comfortable and well appointed, and obviously very well maintained. The property and surrounding area is simply stunning. My boys and I had a great time playing in the spacious yard, barbecuing, smores over the fire, kayaking, fishing and bonding in Gods country. We will definitely return. And the staff at All Star Lodging are phenomenal, with exceptional customer service! Thank you! Bill

Hi there! We absolutely loved our stay at Stone House! The house is gorgeous! Love the huge bedrooms and the comfortable beds! Very nice master bath and steam shower. The living room and kitchen were cozy with everything supplied that we needed. The land surrounding the property is wide open and just beautiful! And the river is right there. I cant really think of any improvements. It was more than we expected! We truly are hoping to return in the future. Ariane

We cant express how much we loved our second time at the stone house. We were here at the beginning of April and it was a beautiful spring day when we arrived! We enjoyed the outside by walking around near the river and our two dogs loved running around. The second day it snow showered and perfect to sit out on the porch to watch the snow fall with some wine. The kitchen had everything we needed to make meals at home. We slept like a king and queen in the upstairs bed that was so comfy. The steam shower was an added bonus to relax and take advantage of since we do not have anything like that at home. I have to say the stone house is not only historic and beautiful, but warm and welcoming. Thank you again for an easy stay and we made wonderful memories! Looking forward to making this a tradition when we need a get away! Thanks again for everything and we will be back soon! Best, Allison & Shanendoah

Our recent visit to the Stone House was wonderful. The house was beautiful, has so much history, and was beautifully decorated. Our visit was made special as we were able to get a personal tour of the area by Minnie. We hope to be able to visit there again soon.

The Stone House was fantastic! It was a "historical" experience for my family, to spend the weekend on property that my Swiss-German immigrant grandfather settled in 1743. The house was built in 1790 by one of his grandsons. Allstar Lodging was very helpful in facilitating the weekend for us.

The stay at the stone house was great and everything was perfect for the time we stayed there and I am definitely recommending it to everyone who asks where is a good place to stay, or just telling them to go to all-star lodging. Thank-you again and I will be coming back to you guys soon!

Our stay at the Stone House was WONDERFUL!! The booking experience with the staff at All Star was very professional. Correspondence after booking and up to our time of arrival was perfect. The house itself and the grounds were everything we had hoped for the only downside was we wished we had booked an extra day or two. Thank You all for assisting myself and my family in having a GREAT vacation week!!

My family and I had a wonderful time at the Stone House. For a historical building, the inside has been redecorated magnificently, keeping much of the old wooden dcor, while combining it with every modern convenience. The close proximity to the river, and Luray itself, meant that my family and I kept ourselves occupied for the time there. The outside fire pit and grill also meant that we could spend evenings outside and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere -- coming from DC, it was nice not to hear sirens all day long!!! It was also fantastic to watch our three year old daughter just be able to run around. We also met the owner -- Minnie -- and my wife and daughter hit it off with her immediately. She also gave us some great tips for things to do in the area. Thanks again. Finally, we enjoyed ourselves so much that we have decided to spend -- at minimum -- at least one long weekend a year there. It will be one of our family destinations for the foreseeable future. My fiance and I (as of last weekend, during our lovely tip to the Old Stone House!) had a lovely stay with Allstar Lodging. The house was BEAUTIFUL, the surrounding area was BEAUTIFUL, and the modern kitchen was fully stocked so that we had no difficulties cooking a delicious steak dinner and and enjoying by the fireplace. I really over-packed because the house had everything we needed and more. While we wish you guys could have controlled the winter weather so we could spend more time outside of that warm little house, our pictures out in the snow will be even more memorable :)While I was a little bit nervous about showing up in such a secluded location without even meeting any of your staff in person beforehand, everything was perfectly taken care of and we were simply taken aback by what a lovely job the staff did scattering rose petals and candles throughout the house.Cant thank your team enough for exceeding our expectations, we will certainly be back to celebrate our annivers

The house was great - well decorated and comfortable - especially with regard to the upstairs bedrooms and bath. The kitchen was perfect with all the amenities one would need. The house was also very clean upon arrival. The only comment about the house is that there could be more lighting downstairs, because its an old stone house (which makes it unique and great) - there werent enough windows in the living space - so they should put in more lights. The property was absolutely stunning. The grass was perfectly mowed and immaculate. There is a long dirt road by the river that was perfect for long quiet walks and the views were spectacular. The location was also very convenient for Luray and both parks. On my wish list would be a pool - but I suppose that would be pushing it! I would definitely stay here again and hope to in the near future Kira

We really enjoyed our accommodations at the Stone House in the Shenandoah Valley over the New Year. The house itself was very clean and very inviting and in a perfect location for us. The owners took great care in making the house feel cozy and comfortable. Our 3 year old daughter loved it also and still talks about it. It was a last minute decision for us to go somewhere and we were glad this home was available. It was great to walk around on the property outside also, despite it being so cold. The house seemed to have everything we needed and hopefully we can return here again some day. Thanks so much! Sincerely, Peter, Jenn, and Abby
